love and loss - The Road & Love is a Mix Tape

Road One plus about being on the road for most of the last month -- reading.  I can knock out a few chapters on my SB to SFO leg, then hit at least another on my way to Reno. So far in May I've read the very intense The Road by Cormac McCarthy gritty, moving tale of survival and love. my buddy Mike turned me on to McCarthy and I love his hard-hitting, economical style. Warning: If you have kids, you will be bawling by about page 11. NOT the best book to read on an airplane but awesome nevertheless...

Mixtape I finished Love is a Mix Tape by music writer and critic Rob Sheffield last week.  I love Rob's stuff in Rolling Stone and this book just nailed it for honesty, love, and loss.  This is his story of how he met his wife, their time together before she died and his life since. I'm quite sure I have no idea what it would feel like to lose my wife but Rob and Joan Didion, in her amazing Year of Magical Thinking, give it to me without any sap or fluff.  Plus the mix tape theme that runs throughout the book is so cool.
